Before I started Florek’s Violin and Music Shop I was a violin teacher and repairman at Frank’s Violin Shop in Broad Ripple. I left Frank’s to pursue my dream of owning a violin shop after marrying my wife Nadine. We discussed what we wanted to do and she said to go for it, so we did! The Violin shop started in a 4th bedroom that was about 8×10 about a month after we got married. I was the traveling violin teacher, going to students’ homes in town, which was about 500 miles a week.
Needless to say we found a location on East 10th street and Florek’s Violin Shop was born on Feb 1, 1998. In the summer of 2000, a large music store was going out of business and we managed to purchase a lot of their inventory. We needed more room so we moved the shop to a larger unit in the same building.
Then it happened… Family Music’s owner (Sammy Terry) was retiring. Somehow, through a mutual student, we got a guitar and a drum teacher from Family Music. We started selling guitars, other fretted instruments, amps, drums and band instruments.
Now we needed more room. The store kept growing and we got a piano teacher! We opened up the wall between the old unit (small) and the larger unit. Now we had almost 225 families at my store every week. Somewhere during that time period we began a orchestra and band rental program, It went from 20…to 40 ..to over 100 rentals!
Now we have moved to our new location on East Washington Street. The new location has provided our students and customers a better location with better access.
